This artwork is a visual celebration of the 2025 NAIDOC Week theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.” It honours a powerful 50-year journey—reflecting the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the wisdom of our Elders, and the hope carried by our young leaders who now walk proudly in their footsteps.
At the heart of the piece, the silhouetted figures represent the next generation rising—young people shaped by the stories of their ancestors and communities. They stand tall, looking ahead with confidence, symbolising self-determination, courage, and the responsibility they carry to continue the legacy. Each figure is surrounded by waves of colour and flowing lines, portraying Songlines, energy, and cultural knowledge passed through time and space—alive in the land, water, and spirit.
The concentric circles reflect places of gathering, ceremony, and community. They remind us of the strength found in coming together, and the unbroken connections that bind generations. The eye-shaped motif represents vision—the ability to see with clarity, to dream, and to lead. It symbolises the watchful guidance of Elders and the foresight of young leaders forging a future grounded in culture, truth, and unity.
The vibrant palette of ochres, earthy reds, deep blues, and glowing oranges honours Country—from the desert to the ocean—and the many nations across Australia. These colours breathe life into the movement of NAIDOC, representing both the struggles and triumphs of the past, and the bright momentum of what is to come.
This artwork tells a story not just of remembrance, but of renewal. It is a celebration of cultural pride, shared strength, and a future shaped by Indigenous voices leading the way—strong, visionary, and deeply rooted in legacy.
