Walu-ma-rra (to be a guardian, protect)

This painting holds a special place in my heart, featuring my totem, Maliyan—the powerful wedge-tailed eagle. It symbolises our beautiful country and underscores the importance of protecting it.

The wedge-tailed eagle carries deep meaning, embodying healing, strength, and resilience for many of our people. Its beauty and power make it an ideal symbol for the "Heal Country" theme, with Maliyan acting as a guardian of our land.

The 2021 NAIDOC theme, "Heal Country," calls on all of us to strive for stronger protections for our lands, waters, sacred sites, and cultural traditions against exploitation, desecration, and destruction. Since colonisation, our country has faced numerous challenges—land clearing, urban development, shifts away from traditional fire management, and pollution, to name just a few. These actions have impacted our ecosystems and threatened our native plants and animals, causing significant cultural and environmental losses.

We have already lost so much, but it’s not too late to make a change. Our land and wildlife are integral to our culture, and their destruction means a part of us is lost forever. By coming together, we can protect and preserve our lands and culture as guardians, ensuring a stronger future for all Australians.
